Rwanda has struck a deal with the US to accept up to 250 migrants deported under the Trump administration’s intensified immigration crackdown. The agreement, signed in June, allows Rwandan authorities to vet each immigrant, providing approved individuals with housing, healthcare, and job training. While Rwanda cites its history of displacement as motivation for its participation in the scheme, critics warn of human rights concerns. The US will fund the program via a grant, though the amount remains undisclosed. Deportees can leave Rwanda if they choose, and only those with no active criminal cases will be accepted. While critics decry such third-country deportations as inhumane, Kigali continues to position itself as a resettlement hub. In 2022, it signed a similar agreement with the UK, although that has since been scrapped.
