Official statements remain vague, with analysts suggesting Ramaphosa’s engagement is more symbolic than substantive. For one, South Africa’s 2023 African Peace Initiative, once seen as a promising platform, has lost momentum. Meanwhile, Pretoria has taken on a humanitarian role, attempting to repatriate Ukrainian children abducted by Russia—though progress has been slow.
