Ramaphosa’s Quiet Calls: Is South Africa Shaping Ukraine Peace?

African players poised to excel in the EPL campaign.

As global eyes turn to the upcoming Trump-Putin peace summit in Alaska, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent calls with Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, and Volodymyr Zelensky have sparked speculation about South Africa’s role in ending the 42-month Ukraine war. Official statements remain vague, with analysts suggesting Ramaphosa’s engagement is more symbolic than substantive. For one, South Africa’s 2023 African Peace Initiative, once seen as a promising platform, has lost momentum. Meanwhile, Pretoria has taken on a humanitarian role, attempting to repatriate Ukrainian children abducted by Russia—though progress has been slow. Nevertheless, South Africa’s position as a bridge between Kyiv, Moscow, and the Global South could keep Africa’s voice in the peace process.
