ECOWAS Chair Signals Rapprochement in Historic Burkina Faso Visit

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has made a surprise visit to Burkina Faso, becoming the first ECOWAS leader to engage directly with a member of the breakaway Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—the three members of the AES—formally withdrew from ECOWAS earlier this year to create the alliance. During his visit, Bio met with junta leader Capt. Ibrahim Traoré. He pledged to strengthen ties between ECOWAS and the AES while working toward restoring peace in Burkina Faso. While ECOWAS has tried to bring the three countries back into the fold, observers say Bio’s outreach suggests growing acceptance of the breakaway alliance. Consequently, analysts view this outreach as a pragmatic move toward collaboration rather than insistence on reunification, potentially paving the way for renewed stability in a deeply turbulent region.
