DRC Faces Growing Crisis as Trenches Displace Thousands

Gigantic trenches known as urban gullies are tearing through cities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, swallowing homes, roads, and entire communities. A new study has mapped nearly 3,000 gullies across the country, estimating that almost 120,000 people have already been displaced since 2004. This risk is exacerbated by rapid urbanization, weak planning, and climate-driven rainfall, which could put hundreds of thousands more in danger in the coming decade. Kinshasa, now home to 18 million people, is among the worst affected, with over 800 active gullies. While local communities attempt stabilization with bamboo or sandbags, these measures are often insufficient against the powerful erosion. Scientists warn that without major investment in urban planning and water management, this creeping disaster will intensify, endangering more families with every rainy season.
