South Africa secures breakthrough fruit export deal with China

South African agriculture is ripe with new opportunity following a landmark trade protocol signed with China. This groundbreaking deal grants South Africa access to the Chinese market for five key stone fruits: apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, and prunes. The agreement is projected to unlock an estimated $23 million over the next five years, providing a major boost for local farmers. Notably, it’s China’s first agreement granting access to multiple stone fruits from one country under a single framework. This strategic move comes as South Africa actively diversifies its export markets in response to recent US tariff hikes. The momentum doesn’t stop there; technical inspections for cherries and blueberries are already planned, potentially opening the door for even more produce in the next harvest.
