SA takes on global shipping giants

10

South Africa’s Competition Commission has taken eight major global shipping companies to the Competition Tribunal, accusing them of fixing cargo rates on key trade routes. The case centers on allegations that firms such as Maersk, MSC, and CMA-CGM coordinated General Rate Increases between 2008 and 2018 on routes connecting South Africa with Asia and West Africa. Investigators found identical price hikes on key South African routes, prompting concerns about inflated import costs and weakened export competitiveness. Officials argue that dismantling the cartel could lower consumer prices and strengthen South Africa’s position in global markets. The case also highlights how shipping cartels—once openly accepted—continue to shape industry dynamics today.
