South Africans seek end to B-BBEE?

3

A new study reveals a significant shift in South African public opinion, with a majority now favoring an end to the nation’s flagship Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) policy. According to the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, 54% of citizens believe the rules should be phased out, arguing that hiring and promotions should prioritize merit. Meanwhile, two-thirds of respondents think racial classifications cause more harm than good. This shift comes amid global debates over affirmative action and criticism from figures such as Elon Musk. Yet the findings also reveal broad agreement that the workforce should reflect the country’s demographics. Currently, South Africa has deep inequalities, with unemployment for Black South Africans far outpacing that of Whites decades after apartheid. The mixed views highlight a nation grappling with how best to achieve lasting economic justice.
