Egypt’s Colossi of Memnon rise again

9

After decades of painstaking work, Egypt has unveiled the newly restored Colossi of Memnon at the entrance to Pharaoh Amenhotep III’s vast Luxor burial complex. These twin quartzite statues, damaged by ancient earthquakes, floods, and centuries of neglect, have been carefully reconstructed through a long-running international collaboration involving experts from Egypt, Germany, Japan, and the United States. Through excavation, conservation, and 3D scanning, restorers reunited original fragments with modern additions designed for durability and historical accuracy. Now standing about 45 feet tall, the Colossi once again honor a ruler from Egypt’s golden age over 3,300 years ago. Their revival marks a major milestone for Luxor’s heritage—and sets the stage for further high-profile restorations nearby.
