International artist Julie Mehretu is expanding her focus beyond world-class galleries to the open road, launching a pan-African initiative to empower the next generation of creatives. Collaborating with BMW, the Ethiopian-born artist is hosting media and film workshops across five major cities, from Lagos to Cape Town. This ambitious project, fueled by the African Film and Media Arts Collective, encourages local filmmakers to reclaim their narratives while exploring a deeply mediated world. The resulting films will debut at Cape Town’s Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, showcasing innovative African storytelling. Meanwhile, Mehretu is also reaching new heights in the US, designing a massive 34-story glass installation for the Obama Presidential Center. By bridging continents and disciplines, she is turning her international success into a collective platform where African voices can truly resonate.
