Inside Itana’s bid to fix Nigeria’s free zone

6

Nigeria’s Itana is testing whether a digital-first free trade zone can succeed where traditional economic zones have struggled. Launched in 2023, the privately run zone is attracting startups, diaspora founders, and foreign investors drawn by improved FX stability, easier visas, and a regulatory framework tailored to tech-driven businesses. Hosting about 50 companies so far, Itana offers tax incentives, multicurrency accounts, capital repatriation, and a one-stop compliance model that reduces bureaucratic friction. Its growing appeal, especially among diaspora founders, suggests a strong market need. However, skeptics question whether its tax incentives justify the setup costs for asset-light startups, which already operate remotely. Itana’s ultimate test will be proving it can consistently deliver stability and significantly improve a startup’s survival odds in Nigeria’s challenging ecosystem.
