Nigeria has reclaimed center stage in transatlantic energy trade, emerging as Africa’s largest crude oil exporter to the United States in the first eight months of 2025. According to the US Mission, Nigeria shipped 33.23 million barrels worth $2.57 billion between January and August, accounting for more than half of all African crude sent to the US during that period. The strong showing highlights Nigeria’s enduring role in US energy diversification, even as trade flows briefly reversed earlier this year. In February and March, Nigeria imported more US crude than it exported, driven largely by rising demand from the Dangote Refinery. Together, these shifts underscore a dynamic and deepening energy relationship with rising economic stakes on both sides.
