How Zambia’s 70s Afro-Rock inspires a new generation

9

A psychedelic rock movement born in 1970s Zambia, known as Zamrock, is enjoying an unlikely global revival, finding new life with today’s artists and audiences. Once fueled by post-independence optimism and a state push for local music, the genre blended fuzzed-out guitars with African rhythms before collapsing amid economic decline, piracy, and the HIV/AIDS crisis. Decades later, Western record collectors, reissues, and a sampling by Tyler, the Creator have reignited interest, sending rare vinyl prices soaring and putting veteran bands like WITCH back on international stages. Now, artists such as Sampa the Great are reclaiming the sound, reworking Zamrock’s bold, post-colonial spirit into a modern form she calls “nu Zamrock,” ensuring the genre’s legacy moves forward—not just as samples, but as a living tradition.
