Uganda’s leading opposition figure, Bobi Wine, is urging foreign governments to halt funding to President Yoweri Museveni’s administration, arguing that aid is propping up repression ahead of a tightly controlled election. Speaking days before the vote, the pop star-turned politician said growing security crackdowns, arrests of hundreds of opposition supporters, and likely internet shutdowns threaten any chance of a credible poll. Wine, who says his life is in danger, described campaigning in body armor as intimidation intensifies. Rights groups, including Amnesty International, have echoed Wine’s concerns over excessive force and arbitrary detentions. While analysts expect Museveni to prevail in a flawed process, Wine believes sustained international pressure could still push Uganda toward a freer vote.
