AES bloc seeks sovereignty with Russian satellite tech

African and American officials signing agreement.

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—is pursuing an ambitious project to build the region’s first shared telecommunications satellite with Russian assistance. This initiative, discussed in high-level meetings with Russian officials and cosmonauts, aims to achieve technological independence and reduce reliance on Western infrastructure. The satellite will provide vital broadband internet, encrypted communications, and broadcasting to remote areas lacking traditional connectivity. Furthermore, its remote sensing capabilities could enhance border security and disaster management across the vast Sahelian terrain. For the AES, this represents a major leap in sovereignty and regional cooperation. For Russia, it deepens strategic influence in Africa as Western presence recedes, marking a significant geopolitical alignment.
