Africa becomes China’s export safety valve

Nigeria export 2025

Chinese exports to Africa surged in 2025, pushing the continent’s trade deficit with Beijing to a record $102 billion as Chinese firms seek new markets amid rising US trade pressure. Data shows shipments from China to Africa jumped nearly 26% to $225 billion, far outpacing Africa’s exports to China, which grew modestly to $123 billion. Analysts link this flood of goods, including crucial industrial equipment and solar panels, to Chinese firms seeking new markets amid heightened trade tensions with the United States. While this provides Africa with needed capital goods for development, it underscores a deepening dependency. Although China has introduced a zero-tariff policy to help African exports, fundamental challenges like low industrial capacity and high non-tariff barriers persist, leaving the continent’s trade profile heavily skewed toward raw materials.
