African cinema is set for a prominent showcase at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), with four distinct productions selected for the prestigious main competition. The lineup features a compelling mix of veteran and emerging directorial voices from across the continent. Notable entries include Alain Gomis’s Franco-Senegalese film “Dao,” exploring family ties across Europe and West Africa, and Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s “Soumsoum, the Night of the Stars,” a Chadian tale blending the natural and metaphysical. They are joined by Leyla Bouzid’s Franco-Tunisian drama “In A Whisper” and Abdallah Alkhatib’s “Chronicles From the Siege,” an Algeria-France co-production. This strong representation highlights the diversity and growing global resonance of African storytelling, promising captivating narratives of heritage, conflict, and destiny for the festival audience.
