A creative experiment in Lagos is testing whether Nigeria’s next global Afrobeats hits might carry a French twist. Nine French rap, pop, and urban music producers teamed up with Nigerian artists at Mavin Records, crafting 60 tracks in an energetic week-long session. The camp blended French, English, Nigerian Pidgin, and Creole, reflecting Afrobeats’ growing global reach and collaborative spirit. Organized by France’s Sacem in collaboration with the French embassy and Mavin Records, the sessions paired artists by theme, sparking fresh sonic ideas. Participating producers celebrated the dynamic Nigerian approach to songwriting, which pushes ideas further into captivating, rhythmic territory. Such collaborations highlight the genre’s evolving international journey, proving that while Afrobeats has its roots in West Africa, its future will be shaped by borderless creativity.
