Qatar Airways eyes Kenya Airways stake in Africa expansion

Qatar Airways is exploring a deeper partnership with Kenya Airways, including a possible equity stake, as the Gulf carrier intensifies its push into Africa’s fast-growing aviation market. Building on an existing codeshare agreement and expanded flights between Doha and Nairobi, Qatar sees Kenya Airways as a gateway to hard-to-reach markets across East, Central, and Southern Africa. The move aligns with Qatar Airways’ broader regional strategy, which includes a 25% stake in South Africa’s Airlink and ongoing negotiations over Rwanda’s airport and airline. However, Kenya Airways’ heavy debt burden and financial volatility could complicate negotiations, even as Kenya seeks strategic investors under its privatization drive. Despite these challenges, closer cooperation could reshape East African aviation and improve Kenya Airways’ standing as a key regional hub.
