Inside Kenya’s revolutionary school for dyslexic learners

Students with dyslexia engaged in learning activities at Kenya's innovative school.

In Kenya, the Rare Gem Talent School is rethinking how classrooms work for students with dyslexia. Recognizing that standard curriculums often sideline the 10% of students with dyslexia, this pioneering institution uses a “multi-sensorial” approach to bridge the literacy gap. Instead of rote drills, students master reading through catchy songs, color-coded phonics, and tactile objects. The approach targets a critical gap in a country where school enrollment has surged, but children with learning disabilities are often overlooked. Founded in 2012, the school has grown from fewer than 10 pupils to more than 200, replacing the stigma of traditional bullying with mentorship and creativity. Its model, which includes a modified national curriculum rather than a separate track, has proven that tailored tweaks—rather than total overhauls—can transform struggling learners into confident achievers.
