Nigeria’s Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage is partnering with Berklee College of Music to train the next generation of Nigerian creatives. Savage, now 46, wants to contribute to the future of African music and believes the best way to do that is to provide creators with education they wouldn’t otherwise have access to. Under the partnership, Berklee faculty will host a four-day intensive training workshop in Nigeria, where they will equip 100 Nigerian music creators with music production, songwriting, sound engineering, harmony, and ear training skills. The workshop will also teach attendees about copyright, entertainment law, and publishing. At the end, participants will put together live ensemble performances, with the most promising participants identified for future scholarships to Berklee. As Savage puts it, education is what will turn the growing visibility of Sub-Saharan Africa’s music into empowerment.
