South African superstar Tyla has cemented her place as one of the biggest pop stars of the century with “Water,” which was selected as one of Spotify’s “100 Greatest Pop Songs of the Streaming Era.” Water, ranked number 50, was one of three African-linked songs on the list. The other two are “One Dance,” a 2016 Drake track that featured Kyla Reid and Afrobeats legend Wizkid, as well as Rema’s “Calm Down,” which featured Selena Gomez. The list includes songs released after 2015, with the curation also considering cultural impact, storytelling, timelessness, and musical quality, rather than pure streaming numbers. According to Spotify’s editors, who curated the list, “Water” was selected for taking “Popiano” global. “One Dance” was chosen for doing the same for Afrobeats, while “Calm Down” became a global crossover success and broke multiple chart records.
