US drops sanctions on Malian officials after three-year standoff

US Drops Sanctions on Malian Officials.

The US has removed sanctions against several high-ranking Malian officials, ending a three-year diplomatic freeze initiated after the 2021 coup. This pivot comes as the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) consolidates its regional influence and shifts its security dependencies. The three officials were sanctioned for championing cooperation between Mali’s transitional government and Russia’s Wagner Group. Mali’s government welcomed the development, which it described as a major step toward normalizing relations between the two countries. With the move, Mali’s military transition government gains a significant symbolic and diplomatic victory, signaling a crack in Western efforts to isolate the junta. Meanwhile, pro-democracy activists and ECOWAS hardliners lose a key piece of international leverage previously used to pressure Bamako toward a rapid civilian transition. The move suggests Washington is shifting from a policy of “punitive isolation” to “pragmatic engagement” in an attempt to counter Russia’s growing dominance in the Sahel.
