Microsoft is making a bold push to expand its AI footprint in Africa. Among other things, the tech giant plans to train 3 million people across the continent through partnerships with schools, universities, and tech hubs in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Morocco. The company has also teamed up with MTN Group to deliver Microsoft 365 and its generative AI tool, Copilot, to MTN’s 300 million subscribers. Additionally, Microsoft plans to invest about $330 million in South Africa’s cloud and AI infrastructure by 2027. The move is part of a broader contest with Chinese firms like DeepSeek, whose low-cost AI models have gained traction across the continent. Analysts say Africa’s growing digital economy and youthful developer population make it a key frontier for AI companies, with Microsoft’s deep institutional ties giving it a competitive edge.
