Tanzania’s three-wheeled taxi drivers are turning to compressed natural gas (CNG) to escape soaring fuel prices and punishing workdays. After converting his bajaji to CNG, driver Zawadi Kayaula slashed daily fuel costs by over 60%, allowing him to reach his income goals faster and spend his evenings with his family. While the upfront conversion cost is steep, most drivers recoup their investment in months. CNG burns cleaner than petrol, cuts carbon emissions, and comes from domestic reserves—reducing reliance on imported fuels. However, infrastructure gaps remain outside Dar es Salaam, where most stations are located. Still, with growing interest, government support, and real savings, Tanzania’s CNG revolution is offering drivers cheaper rides and more time.
