Pope Leo promotes unity in Cameroon’s conflict zones

Pope Leo in Cameroon

Pope Leo arrived in Cameroon on a four-nation African tour, bringing a message of unity to the conflict-ravaged Anglophone regions. Presiding over an interfaith meeting in Bamenda, the Pope championed grassroots peacebuilding to ease tensions stemming from a deadly separatist rebellion that has claimed over 6,000 lives and displaced 600,000 citizens since 2017. In a pointed arrival speech, Pope Leo directly challenged the nation’s political elite, urging them to break the “chains of corruption.” His remarks were widely seen as a rebuke of 93-year-old President Paul Biya, who recently secured a disputed eighth term. Leo’s visit shines a spotlight on Anglophone communities long ignored by Yaoundé, as well as the country’s interfaith peacebuilders. For President Biya, the Pope brings highly publicized international moral scrutiny over the corruption and democratic backsliding that have pervaded his rule. Long term, the visit could catalyze sustained interfaith dialogue and help build a civilian infrastructure for peace.
