Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe has become the first athlete to break the two-hour marathon barrier in a competitive race. Sawe accomplished this in London, crossing the finish line on The Mall in a staggering 1:59:30. In doing so, he shattered the late Kelvin Kiptum’s world record by over a minute. Remarkably, debutant Yomif Kejelcha also went sub-two hours. He finished in 1:59:41 to take second, making the London Marathon the day on which two men achieved what was once considered humanly impossible in a race setting. Eliud Kipchoge had done it in 2019, but under controlled, non-competitive conditions. Sawe, unbeaten in all four marathons he has entered, has now cemented his place among the sport’s all-time greats. In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa added to the historic day by improving her own world record for a women-only field.
