South Africa is under pressure to act after a fresh wave of xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals sparked a formal diplomatic protest from Ghana. The move follows disturbing videos showing intimidation and assaults on migrants, including a Ghanaian man in KwaZulu-Natal who was harassed by a mob and told to leave the country. Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, demanded urgent intervention. South African officials, including Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola, have since condemned the violence as a threat to the rule of law and constitutional order. Meanwhile, the police have been placed on high alert with orders to arrest anyone inciting or participating in attacks. Officials are urging calm while advocates warn that migrants continue to be wrongly scapegoated for the country’s economic struggles.
