Four male mountain bongos have arrived in Kenya from the Czech Republic’s Zoo Dvůr Králové, marking a significant milestone in the effort to save one of the world’s rarest mammals. Arriving in Nairobi to an official welcome, the striking chestnut-red animals were swiftly relocated to the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy (MKWC), a protected reserve. With fewer than 100 mountain bongos estimated to remain in the wild, down from around 500 in the 1970s, this “historic homecoming” aims to boost genetic diversity within the local breeding population. Kenya’s national recovery plan seeks to grow the wild population to 700 by 2050, utilizing a strategy of acclimatization and gradual reintroduction into the high-altitude forests of Mount Kenya.
