Inside Cameroon’s Demsa Horse Museum

Colorful handcrafted horse figurines with intricate designs and accessories.

Tucked in the northern Cameroonian border town of Demsa Gashiga, the Demsa Horse Museum is a rich cultural gem drawing visitors from across the region and beyond. Founded in 2007 by Lamido Moustapha Moussa, the museum houses over 1,200 objects celebrating the centuries-old role of horses in royal ceremony and local governance—alongside a distinctive collection of vintage vehicles that traces the transition from horseback to horsepower. Visitors often remark on the museum’s unexpected depth, blending history with technological evolution. Monthly gymkhanas further reinforce the enduring cultural importance of horses, even as automobiles dominate daily life. For the community, the museum both preserves cultural heritage and establishes Demsa Gashiga as a genuine tourism destination, attracting curious visitors who might otherwise have no reason to stop.
