African artists and models made a powerful statement at the 2026 Met Gala in New York, reinforcing the continent’s growing influence on global fashion. South African singer Tyla drew attention in a custom Valentino look designed by Alessandro Michele, featuring crystal draping and peacock-inspired details. South Sudanese model Anok Yai stunned in a sculptural Balenciaga “Black Madonna” gown that she described as a symbol of hope. Skepta wore a Thom Browne suit embroidered with replicas of his tattoos, while South Sudanese model Adut Akech appeared in a maternity-inspired gown as part of the gala’s host committee. Other standout appearances included Moroccan-Egyptian model Imaan Hammam and South African-born singer Doja Cat. Their presence underscored Africa’s shift from influencing fashion trends to actively shaping the industry’s future.
