South Africa’s Coastline Offers Spectacular Whale Watching

Each year between June and November, southern right and humpback whales travel from Antarctic feeding grounds to the warmer waters of South Africa’s coastline, offering some of the world’s finest land-based whale watching opportunities. Hermanus, perched above Walker Bay in the Western Cape, remains the country’s most celebrated destination, where cliff-top paths offer close-up views of breaching and nursing whales during peak season from August through October. De Hoop Nature Reserve hosts one of the largest calving concentrations along the coast, while KwaZulu-Natal’s iSimangaliso Wetland Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—is the prime location for humpback sightings. Quieter alternatives like Stilbaai and Kenton-on-Sea offer unhurried, crowd-free encounters. Beyond tourism, whale migration plays a vital ecological role in marine nutrient cycling, and South Africa’s network of protected marine areas remains central to the species’ ongoing recovery.
