Nigeria-Morocco Pipeline Seeks US Financial Backing

Nigeria and Morocco are intensifying efforts to secure US funding for the ambitious Atlantic African Gas Pipeline, a $25 billion project designed to connect West African gas supplies to Europe while expanding regional energy access. Spanning roughly 6,900 km across 13 countries, the pipeline is expected to strengthen electricity generation, industrialization, and intra-African energy integration. Officials from Morocco’s hydrocarbon agency recently visited Washington to court institutions, including the US Development Finance Corporation, amid growing uncertainty over European financing commitments. Supporters argue the coastal route offers a safer and more practical alternative to the stalled Trans-Saharan pipeline through the Sahel. However, questions remain over long-term European gas demand, financing viability, and environmental regulations as Europe accelerates its transition toward renewable energy sources.
