Kenyans Protest Proposed US Ebola Quarantine Facility

Residents of Nanyuki, Kenya, are voicing strong opposition to a proposed US-backed Ebola quarantine facility near Laikipia Air Base, arguing that it could expose local communities to unnecessary health risks. The plan would house US citizens potentially exposed to Ebola during an outbreak affecting Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Critics argue the plan treats Kenya as a lesser nation and raises serious sovereignty concerns. They accuse Washington of applying double standards by refusing to admit possible Ebola cases at home while seeking to quarantine them abroad. Opposition to the plan further intensified after protests during which two people died. Following a petition by a Kenyan nonprofit organization, a Nairobi high court temporarily blocked the facility. President William Ruto has defended the proposal as part of broader health preparedness efforts, but opponents remain unconvinced.
