Chad’s Language Reform Reflects Political Realignment

Chad’s education minister issued a directive in April requiring Standard Arabic to receive equal instructional time and examination status as French beginning the next school year. According to analysts, the move is more than just about education and highlights deep political and geopolitical shifts within the country. Supporters see the move as fulfilling long-standing commitments to bilingualism, but critics argue it favors the Arabic-speaking elite while disadvantaging French-speaking communities, many of whom form the political opposition. The reform also reflects President Mahamat Déby’s broader effort to strengthen ties with Arab states, particularly the United Arab Emirates, while distancing Chad from former colonial power France. However, significant challenges remain, including a shortage of qualified Arabic teachers and educational materials. Analysts warn that implementing the policy without addressing these structural gaps could deepen social divisions and reinforce perceptions of political exclusion among large segments of the population.
