Social Media Reshapes Daily Life Across Africa

Social media has transformed from a platform for sharing creative work into a powerful force shaping identity, culture, politics, and commerce across Africa. The shift reflects a broader reality: smartphones have become central to how millions consume news, learn skills, engage in activism, and build careers. Social media has also helped mobilize major movements, from Kenya’s anti-tax protests to South Africa’s #FeesMustFall campaign, while expanding access to education and global audiences. Yet the benefits come with costs. For one, constant exposure to curated lifestyles fuels comparison, anxiety, and unrealistic expectations. For another, social media can spread misinformation rapidly. Experts also argue that online connections are not the same as genuine community. Consequently, they urge users to maintain strong offline relationships to avoid giving excessive influence to the carefully constructed realities presented on social platforms.
