Kenyan Court Upholds Gachagua Impeachment

A Kenyan High Court has dealt a blow to Kenya’s former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political ambitions, upholding his 2024 impeachment. A three-judge panel rejected his claims that the impeachment process was politically motivated. However, it ruled that the Senate violated Gachagua’s rights by continuing proceedings after he became ill. The court awarded him approximately $386,000 in compensation but said the violation did not invalidate the impeachment. The decision bars Gachagua from holding public office, including the presidency. Gachagua, once a key ally of President William Ruto, has since become one of the government’s most outspoken critics. His removal followed accusations of corruption, ethnic incitement, and undermining government operations, all of which he denies. Gachagua’s legal team has since announced that it plans to appeal the decision.
