GLP-1 Drugs Challenge Traditional Black Beauty Ideals

The rapid rise of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro is fueling debate about whether changing beauty standards are affecting perceptions of Black bodies across the diaspora. While these medications offer significant health benefits, particularly for communities disproportionately affected by diabetes, Sudanese-British writer Nesrine Malik argues that they could weaken longstanding cultural appreciation for fuller body types. In countries including South Africa, Ghana, and Kenya, growing use of the drugs among middle-class consumers has linked weight loss with status, wealth, and social mobility. Celebrity endorsements have amplified the trend, with high-profile figures such as Serena Williams and Oprah Winfrey helping normalize their use. Malik fears the shift may encourage increasingly narrow ideals that blend traditionally Black and Western beauty standards. The debate highlights tensions between improving health outcomes and preserving cultural perspectives that historically embraced a wider range of body shapes and appearances.
