South Africa Mass Shooting Leaves 12 Dead

South African police are searching for more than 10 suspects after a mass shooting in the Cleveland area of Johannesburg left 12 people dead and nine others injured. Authorities said the attackers arrived in a white Toyota minibus, entered the Jumpers informal settlement from two entrance points, fired at multiple locations, and fled in the same vehicle. Eight men and three women were declared dead at the scene, while another victim later died in hospital. Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni described the attack as “insane” and “barbaric,” noting the proximity to a mining area as a possible line of inquiry. However, no motive has been confirmed. The incident underscores South Africa’s ongoing struggle with violent crime and the challenges of policing informal settlements and heavily armed criminal networks.
