South African authorities are increasing security nationwide ahead of a June 30 deadline set by anti-migrant groups demanding that undocumented foreigners leave the country. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia said forces have increased readiness across all provinces to protect communities and infrastructure, while warning that violence or property destruction won’t be tolerated. The military has also been placed on standby to support law enforcement if necessary. The move follows weeks of xenophobic unrest that has left at least two people dead and prompted several African governments to repatriate their citizens. South Africa has one of the world’s highest unemployment rates, which some, including political parties like the Patriotic Alliance and ActionSA, have blamed on migrants. The tensions come as the country prepares for local elections scheduled for November.
