A Deconstructed Return Of Jazz To The Streets Of Cape Town

As Cape Town rolls into Jazz Week in March 2026, a new rhythm takes over the Inner City.

Jazz In The City 2026 reimagines what a jazz festival can be — deconstructing the traditional format and turning a six–block stretch of Bree Street into a one-night, walkable jazz circuit.

Brought to you by Heineken, powered by FNB Speedpoint and supported by the City of Cape Town, Jazz in the City is positioned as the fringe, street-level alternative alongside the major international  jazz festivals taking place in and around the centre of Cape Town, and invites audiences to rediscover jazz in the places where cities truly breathe — galleries, bars, fashion stores, social clubs, wine bars, hidden rooms and open public spaces.

For one night only – Thursday 26 March, Bree Street — bordered by Castle Street and Wale Street — becomes the Bree Street Jazz Hop. Ten venues and pop-up performance spaces form a dynamic circuit of ticketed and free shows, encouraging audiences to move, explore, and curate their own experience.

Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security says “Events have the ability to stimulate economies and create jobs while also promoting social cohesion. Nothing brings people together quite like the love of music, excellent food and an all-round good time. The City of Cape Town is proud to support a unique event like Jazz in the City, which allows residents and visitors to experience music in a distinctive way while exploring the Cape Town inner city. It also reminds us how our shared spaces can come alive through culture, creativity and the simple joy of people coming together”.

As a founding partner, The Mission for Inner City Cape Town is supporting the festival as part of its broader placemaking and urban regeneration strategy.

Tim Harris, co-founder of The Mission for Inner City Cape Town, says “Jazz in the City is a powerful example of how culture can activate public spaces. When streets, heritage buildings and creative hubs are filled with music and people, the city feels alive, connected and accessible. This supports our long-term vision of a safe, inclusive and vibrant Inner City that works for everyone. We are proud to support a festival that not only celebrates African jazz excellence, but also demonstrates how placemaking can strengthen economic activity, tourism and social cohesion in Cape Town’s CBD.”

Affiliate Events

Jazz In The City extends beyond one night with two affiliate initiatives designed to deepen the conversation:

What Is Jazz? — 22 March 2026
An eclectic listening experience taking place at Texas in District Six with an exclusive LGBTQ line-up, this unique event explores the evolution, ownership and future of jazz in South Africa and beyond featuring Desire Marea, Muneyi, Sky Dladla and Mishy Kope.

Inter-Generational Conversations — 25 March 2026
Opening with a special musical dialogue between Steve Dyer and son, Bokani Dyer at Youngblood Africa, this series creates space for exchange between jazz elders and new voices.  Moving forward, the programme will then become a monthly fixture at the Homecoming Centre, fostering mentorship, storytelling and community.

Why Jazz In The City?

Jazz was never meant to be confined.
It lived in streets, in clubs, in unexpected rooms.

Jazz In The City 2026 brings jazz back into the city — and brings the city back to jazz. It invites movement instead of passive consumption. It blurs the line between audience and artist. It creates a cultural corridor where sound, architecture and community converge.

For one night, Bree Street doesn’t host a festival.
It becomes one.

Move freely. Discover organically. Stay late.

For media enquiries, partnership opportunities and ticket information, full programme details will be released in early 2026.
