Ghana, the world’s third-largest exporter of raw cashew nuts, faces challenges in maximizing its revenue from this sector. Despite producing 180,000 tonnes annually, over 80% is exported unprocessed, resulting in lost opportunities for higher profits from roasting. Local entrepreneurs like Mildred Akotia are trying to boost domestic processing, but high interest rates and inadequate machinery hinder progress. While the export of raw cashews generates $300 million in revenue, the industry could thrive even more with better infrastructure and government support, allowing local farmers like Nashiru Seydou to benefit from a more sustainable and profitable supply chain.
