Ethiopia is set to build Africa’s largest airport, a $10 billion mega-hub capable of handling 100 million passengers annually, and the African Development Bank (AfDB) is leading the charge to secure $7.8 billion in financing. Slated for completion by 2029, the four-runway airport near Bishoftu, 45km from Addis Ababa, will dwarf the current Bole International Airport, which is nearing its 25 million passenger limit. Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s top carrier, will cover 20% of the airport’s $10 billion cost, while the rest will be sourced from creditors. A formal signing ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and AfDB’s president, is scheduled for Monday in Addis Ababa.
