A remarkable architectural project in the UAE is bringing African vernacular building traditions to the Arabian desert. Sharjah Bridi Park, designed by Urko Sánchez Architects within the Al Bridi Reserve, features a series of thatched-roof pavilions inspired by traditional African building typologies—rounded volumes, conical profiles, and sweeping rooflines that appear almost sculpted from the earth itself. The structures house educational facilities, ticketing areas, and research spaces, connected by shaded paths and gentle courts that blend seamlessly with the surrounding terrain. Thick earthen walls and deep, overhanging thatched canopies provide natural climate control against the desert sun. The result is a quietly extraordinary fusion of African architectural heritage and contemporary desert design—proof that ancient wisdom travels remarkably well.
