African nations push back on US health deal demands

Pushback on US health deal demands in African nations.

Tensions are rising over a series of new US-Africa health agreements, as the head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention warns of “huge concerns” about data security and pathogen-sharing provisions. Zimbabwe has already pulled out of negotiations over a proposed $367 million deal, citing fears about handing over sensitive health information, while Zambia is seeking to revise a separate billion-dollar agreement. The scrutiny comes as the Trump administration has reshaped global health policy toward bilateral, ‘America First’-style partnerships after significant aid cuts. Even so, several African nations, including DR Congo, continue signing major pacts—raising urgent questions about sovereignty, transparency, and the future of global health collaboration.
