A new book, Global China and the Global Game in Africa, shines a spotlight on African footballers in the Chinese Super League (CSL), revealing how sport is shaping Sino-African relations. Following the 1995 Bosman ruling, which enshrined freedom of movement for football players in law, African players began migrating globally. With China’s economy booming, it soon became a lucrative destination for these players. Between 2006 and 2023, over 141 African players featured in the CSL, sought after for their athleticism and tactical edge. While many enjoy professional and financial rewards, language barriers, cultural adjustments, and isolation are common hurdles. Still, these athletes act as cultural ambassadors, deepening China-Africa ties through people-to-people exchanges. Their presence enriches China’s football and boosts its soft power across Africa.
