African Utilities Embrace AI, Smart Metering, Modernizing Grids Through Real-Time Intelligence

High-voltage power lines and transmission towers supporting electrical grid infrastructure.

African utilities are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence, smart meters and real-time data systems to modernise ageing electricity grids and improve energy reliability. Industry leaders at Enlit Africa highlighted how digital technologies are helping utilities manage rising electricity demand, integrate renewable energy and reduce outages. Smart meters and AI-driven analytics provide operators with continuous visibility across networks, enabling faster fault detection, improved forecasting and more efficient grid management. Utilities such as Eskom and Kenya Power are using these technologies to strengthen resilience and reduce losses. However, challenges remain, including poor data quality, skills shortages and infrastructure constraints, which could slow broader digital transformation across the continent.
