Africa’s inaugural submarine museum has officially opened in Simon’s Town, South Africa, featuring the decommissioned SAS Assegaai, a former South African Navy Daphne-class submarine. The submarine, weighing approximately 700 tons, was relocated to its new location in July 2024 after extensive planning and support from over 150 public sponsors and donors. The museum is a collaboration between the South African Navy, the Naval Heritage Trust, and the South African Navy Museum. Visitors can explore the submarine and learn about its history through guided tours conducted by volunteers and former submariners.
