Across Africa, interest in nuclear power is growing as governments search for reliable, low-carbon energy, but turning ambition into reality remains difficult. Today, the continent’s only plant operates at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station near Cape Town in South Africa, supplying a small share of the nation’s electricity. Still, countries from Egypt to Kenya and Ghana are exploring reactors, often with support from global suppliers. While some projects—like Egypt’s plant at el-Dabaa—are advancing, others face financing gaps, regulatory hurdles, and public concerns over safety and nuclear waste. As energy demand rises and climate pressures mount, Africa’s nuclear future hinges less on ambition and more on whether nations can secure the funds, regulatory rigor, and public trust needed to make it work.
