Airline Emissions Scheme Could Boost African Carbon Markets

A global aviation emissions program is emerging as a potential growth driver for Africa’s carbon credit market, creating new opportunities for project developers and governments across the continent. Under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), airlines will be required to offset emissions from international flights by purchasing carbon credits. Industry participants believe the program could generate predictable demand and higher prices than those available in voluntary carbon markets, making African projects more attractive to investors. However, carbon project developers face significant hurdles, including strict eligibility requirements and the need for government authorization before credits can be traded internationally. Despite these challenges, experts estimate CORSIA could generate more than $100 million annually for African governments while accelerating growth in the continent’s carbon economy.
