Airtel Africa Reports Strong Progress in Digital Inclusion and Financial Services in 2026 Sustainability Report

Airtel Africa has released its 2026 Sustainability Report, highlighting meaningful progress in expanding digital connectivity, advancing financial inclusion, and supporting education across its 14-country footprint. The report underscores the telecommunications giant’s commitment to transforming lives through technology while advancing its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) agenda.

A standout achievement detailed in the report is the continued growth of Airtel Money, the company’s mobile money platform. Customer numbers surpassed 54 million during the 2025/26 reporting period, up significantly from 44.6 million the previous year. This expansion reflects rising demand for accessible digital financial services, particularly among previously unbanked populations in rural and peri-urban areas.

Network coverage also improved, reaching 81.9% of the population across operating markets, up from 81.2%. Rural coverage increased to 73.1%, demonstrating focused efforts to bridge the digital divide. These infrastructure gains are enabling more people to access essential services such as healthcare information, educational content, and government digital platforms.

Gender diversity within the workforce saw modest but steady improvement, with women now comprising 29.9% of employees, up from 29.2%. The company continues to invest in initiatives that promote inclusive workplaces and support female talent development across technical and leadership roles.

“Digital and financial inclusion remain at the heart of our sustainability strategy,” noted company leadership. By connecting more people and providing tools for economic participation, Airtel Africa is contributing directly to broader development goals across the continent.

The report emphasises how expanded connectivity supports education through digital learning platforms and partnerships that deliver affordable smartphones and data packages to students and communities. In several markets, these efforts have accelerated smartphone penetration and digital literacy.

Financial inclusion via Airtel Money has enabled millions to save, send money, pay bills, and access credit and insurance products without traditional bank accounts. This has proven especially impactful for women entrepreneurs and smallholder farmers who previously faced barriers to formal financial services.

As one of Africa’s largest telecom operators, Airtel Africa’s sustainability performance carries significant weight. The company’s focus on responsible business practices, including efforts to manage energy consumption and emissions, aligns with growing investor and stakeholder expectations around ESG performance.

The 2026 report comes at a time when African telecoms are playing an increasingly central role in economic and social development. With continued investment in infrastructure and inclusive services, operators like Airtel are helping drive the continent’s digital future.

Looking forward, Airtel Africa has signalled its intention to maintain momentum in connectivity expansion and financial inclusion while exploring new opportunities in digital services and sustainability innovation. The progress documented in the latest report demonstrates that commercial success and positive social impact can go hand in hand.
